Sit.Feel.Heal.™ Creating a Container of Presence. Talk and Meditation with Joe Clements

In this episode, Joe guides listeners through a simple approach to meditation, emphasizing the process of "Sit, Feel, Heal." He discusses the importance of creating a "container of presence"—a mental space for mindfulness and being present. Clements explores the challenges of maintaining presence amidst life's distractions but highlights that through mindfulness practices, such as focusing on the breath, sounds, and bodily sensations, it's possible to cultivate stillness and emotional healing. He introduces the idea of labeling thoughts and feelings without getting stuck in their stories, allowing individuals to develop healthier relationships with their emotions. By fostering awareness of the present moment, people can create a larger mental space for both difficult emotions and joy to coexist.

Meeting the Addictive Patterns of The Mind with Wisdom and Compassion

In this episode, Joe touches on the nature of addiction, not just to substances, but to thought patterns, emotions, and the constant desire to be somewhere else or to experience something different. He explores how this kind of mental addiction stems from our constant striving for change—wanting more, less, or something different—even when life is objectively good. Joe reflects on how mindfulness meditation has helped him develop a wiser and more compassionate relationship with his thoughts and emotions.

Joe describes the practice of meditation as a training that is counterintuitive in our culture, where people feel they must always be doing something to achieve a better state. He emphasizes that mindfulness is not about dismissing thoughts and emotions but about being aware of them without getting entangled in their narratives.

Surrendering to the Moment

In this episode I reflect on what it means to surrender. Not in a giving up sense but a practice of “giving in”. Giving time, space to and for your inner experience through moment to moment awareness. We can begin to see what each moment has to offer us when we cease fighting. We are constantly battling, anger hatred and delusion. With practice we can learn to rest, respond and tend to the wounds caused by this overwhelming internal battle with wisdom and compassion.

Contemplating the Flavors of the Mind: Second Foundation of Mindfulness

When we practice mindfulness is this way we begin to see that the mind constantly clings-to and pushes away experience with an attitude. Everything is Yum, Ick or Meh. All which lead to suffering when we get caught in the “Why”. When we begin to see this in our minds and just note our experience we can live in a more balanced acceptance of “right now it’s like this.”

Resting on the shore: Guided Meditation

As I practice today at my favorite spot next to the ocean, i am reminded of this simplistic yet difficult practice of finding peace within myself. Finding peace can sometimes feel unattainable. It can feel like a constant battle to get access to that place of peace. The truth I know and must return to over and over is that place of peace is right here, right now within every moment. I just need to take a little time and check in. My heart will guide me if I listen.

I hope you take this as a gentle reminder to take a little time, check in and listen.
